Emmy Night 2009 Live Blog

Welcome everyone to what will either be an insightful evening of thoughts and witticisms from a seasoned media veteran and lifelong pop culture enthusiast...or a complete train wreck that will leave me screaming (Bruce) Villanch?!!!!!!

Anyway, talk about a way to inaugurate my long overdue combination blog/podcast website to supplement my long running home video program The DVD Marquee (which will be returning with an all new episode later this week after a bout with a flu that is thankfully (and hopefully) kaput.

Keep hitting refresh all evening long for my latest musings on Emmy Night 2009...

EMMY AWARDS 2009 Commentary:

6:01 pm-Diggin' TV Guide Channel's Emmy Red Carpet Coverage with Carrie Ann (Inaba) and Chris (Harrison). Nice to see a pre-show at my speed without quadruple picture in picture and an OH MY GOD WE MIGHT MISS SOMEBODY! mentality.

6:55 pm-Some of my "you're pretty!" faves on the red carpet so far: Sandra Oh, Kristin Chenoweth, Allyson Hannigan, Kate Walsh, Holly Hunter, Lisa Edelstein, Carrie Ann Inaba and Kaley Cuoco.

7:13 pm-Opening number from Neil Patrick Harris was so-so lyrically and musically, but his charm carried it thru...but he's gonna

Supporting Actress In A Comedy Pick: Jane Krakowski - 30 Rock

7:18 pm-Knew I should have picked the beloved Kristin Chenoweth who's also a huge fave of mine...but I didn't think Pushing Daisies premature end had enough momentum for awards season.

7:22 pm- Supporting Actor In A Comedy Pick: Neil Patrick Harris-How I Met Your Mother...I do believe this is NPH's year although the always delightful Jon Cryer is a very close second...but "Mother" has been gathering much deserved insider buzz...

Other quick picks in major categories:

Drama Series: Mad Men

Comedy Series: 30 Rock

Best Actor, Drama: Jon Hamm, Mad Men

Best Actress, Drama: Glenn Close, Damages

Best Actor, Comedy: Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock

Best Actress, Comedy: Tina Fey, 30 Rock

7:31 pm-Did I tell you Cryer might land the gold?  Very gracious, just as cool, funny and classy as I thought he'd be. Well deserved, Jon...and have Charlie tighten up the tie, okay?

-Gotta love Sarah Silverman...she knows she hasn't got a chance, so bring out the sight gag...and how about Toni Collette!  Nice shot in the arm for Diabo Cody after a rough weekend of not-so-hot reviews for Jennifer's Body.

-Looks like Neil Patrick's got himself a comedy gimmick a'la Billy Crystal and Jack Palance's push-ups from an awards night of yore thanks to Cryer...

7:46 pm-Did Blake Lively and some other person just hand out a couple of awards? Too busy being mesmerized by the wonders of anti-wardrobe malfunction accessories.

More quick picks:

Best Supporting Actor, Drama: Michael Emerson, Lost - He's got major competition here, but his performance was so hypnotic, so alluring, so do we love him or hate him. Fingers crossed.

Best Supporting Actress, Drama: Rose Byrne, Damages, but don't be surprised to see Chandra Wilson from Grey's Anatomy pull out an upset; she had a pheomenal year.

Best Reality Show: I think it's high time we give some love to: Dancing With The Stars-Always classy, always unpredictable, always fun, the most unlikely pairings breed gold...and then there's Bergeron...speaking of which.

Best Reality Show Host: Tom Bergeron...Best ad-libber in the biz, such a pleasure to watch and if anything, he deserves some kind of award for putting up with some of the worst awards show writing in Emmy history last year.

8:08 pm-Final quick picks of the evening in major categories:

Best Variety, Comedy or Music Series: Late Show With David Letterman-Nearly 30 years since his morning show debut, TV fun boy has never been sharper, funnier or more real. The Carson of the baby boom generation.

Best Variety, Comedy Or Music Special: Kathy Griffin: She'll Cut A Bitch - Going out on a limb, here (especially against the much beloved/revered Chris Rock), but I think Gervais is still a little esoteric for American voters (though he's a phenomenal talent).  But I think this could be Kathy's time.

NOTE: No picks for the movie/mini-series categories...Haven't had the pleasure....

8:20 pm-Hey, aren't you that guy from The White Shadow?  Ken Howard is a long time fave...loved his sly ref to a certain rude twosome in the news as of late (Senator Joe Wilson/Kanye).

8:30 pm-So diggin' NPH's offbeat trivia laced introductions of all the presenters tonight..

8:33 pm-I'd give a week's salary if one of the directorial crew on the transparent director's booth on stage tonight would turn around and yell "wrap it up"!

8:35 pm-Yes! The Emmy award winning Dr. Horrible is controlling your horizontal, the vertical. BWHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!

8:40 pm-Yes, you too can survive a godawful monster movie remake and go on to win an Emmy, kids. Dream on. Congrats, Mrs. Lange.

BREAKING NON-EMMY NEWS: I think I speak for Mr. and Mrs Joe Schmo when I say, Gary Unmarried got renewed for a second season?

8:46 pm-Part of me wanted to call this year's Emmy ceremony a travesty for the Academy completely ignoring the "comedy stylings" of one Keifer Sutherland; his bit during the Ben Stiller tribute at the MTV Movie Awards may be the funniest thing I've seen on TV in 2009 thus far.

8:55 pm-Way to go Bruce Gowers! (Director: American Idol) - As one that's done television directing, it is a challenging job, especially with music involved. In the words of Crosby, Stills and Nash, it's been a long time coming...

9:26 pm-As proof I do have a real life, pardon my laundry and kitchen duties for the last 32 minutes.

9:27 pm-Way to go Michael Emerson!  Class act and I just knew his superlative work wouldn't be denied...and bravo to the always classy Cherry Jones for a fine first year as Madame Presidente.

9:31 pm-"Weep no more for the memories..." Lots of throat tightening moments in what's been a sad year for us mere mortals who have lost many giants amongst us.

9:56 pm-So much for Bryan Cranston being a part of the one and done club a'la Michael Chiklis. Great guy, great actor, killer show...

10:08 pm-Mad Men 2peats; let's eat! And in the words of the great James Cameron, "Let's party 'til dawn!"

Well, those of you in Hollywood party for the little people still washing clothes, putting the kids to bed, praying their DVR's didn't miss an all new Mad Men, etc.

Despite the 2nd half of the ceremony becoming rather ordinary and never reached the creative heights of the Dr. Horrible break-in, Neil Patrick was beyond engaging, gung-ho no matter what and I think he should become both the Tony and Emmy's go to guy yet again in 2010.

Emmys 2009 Final Grade: B-

Neil Patrick Harris Final Grade: A
