The Fighter, Boardwalk Empire,

The King's Speech Among Big Winners

Looking through my Twitter feed last night, one entry caught my eye in the wake of an award show held in Hollywood, hours earlier...

...and it read something like, “They should already hand out the Oscars already”, followed by the hash tag #exercise in futility (spaces added for readability).

Perhaps, but then we wouldn't have gowns to drool over, Hollywood parties to relive vicariously or best of all, the Super Bowl for movie lovers called the Oscars. Come on, there's always a couple of water cooler moments or outfits to keep us talking for a couple of days to help make the first part of a work week more tolerable.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves as we must talk SAG Awards 2011, an affair to which some give love, some give zzzzz's. If anything, it's always the classiest of all glitzy gatherings and the most meaningful as it concentrates solely on honoring the craft of acting....and many of the industry's finest were feted at the 17th annual festivities.

The King's Speech, The Fighter, and television's Boardwalk Empire tied for the most awards with two wins each as the Guild spread honors through a wide array of of films and programs, most of whom have triumphed with top kudos in critics awards and events like the Golden Globes.

If there was one surprise victor to emerge , it was beloved actress Betty White, whose 2011 seems to be starting out the same way 2010 did. Just days after her 89th birthday, the Emmy winner captured her first ever SAG Award for Best Female In A Comedy Series for Hot In Cleveland prompting the veteran performer to quip, “You didn't applaud when I was 40” Her triumph comes almost a year to the day when the Guild bestowed the Lifetime Achievement Award upon her.

30 Rock's Alec Baldwin was somewhat of a surprise victor for the fifth consecutive year as Best Actor In A Comedy Series; a time when most award shows start to hand the torch to another performer. Other winners in the television category included ABC's Modern Family for Best Comedy Ensemble, Julianaargulies nabbing her second consecutive honor for The Good Wife, HBO's Boardwalk Empire, Al Pacino won Best Male Actor In A Made For TV Movie for You Don't Know Jack, and Claire Danes won yet another industry award for her wok in Temple Grandin in the Best Female Actress/Made For TV category.

Utter predictability was the word for the theatrical categories; Christian Bale and Melissa Leo both won Best Supporting Awards for The Fighter, Natalie Portman emerged victoriously for Black Swan, Colin Firth took home Best Actor for The King's Speech, with the ensemble of the latter film capturing the SAG for that category as well.

Veteran actor Ernest Borgnine was awarded the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award for his 164 film career which has included such classics as The Wild Bunch, Bad Day At Black Rock,, The Dirty Dozen, the Oscar winning Marty, and The Poseidon Adventure.

Other memorable moments caught by the cameras:

Julianne Marguiles stunning revelation that a casting rep said her looks weren't America ready...Today that man is going, “Welcome To Burger King, can I take your order, please”

Annette Benning looking like she actually used a comb prior to this ceremony while co-presenter Mark Ruffalo barely used one, But that works for him.

Eva Longoria looking single and ready to mingle. I can say no more.

Hillary Swank being caught by a reaction camera remarking, “So sweet”, in response to Julianna Margulies touching speech that thanked her diligent New York crew working in recent horrific location conditions, and thanking her husband's parents for creating him.

SAG president Ken Howard getting as much applause as Obama did in Arizona.

A Mila Kunis cutaway during the Best Supporting Role intros catching her giggling like a 3 year old...

Jane Leeves looking near tears as Betty White accepted her award for Hot In Cleveland.

Valerie Bertineli's response to the end of White's speech? Priceless..

Morgan Freeman's funny response to a standing ovation: I can't see the teleprompter with you all standing up...

Christian Bale not only winning an award on his birthday, but also being surprised by the real life character he portrayed in the movie. At first, I thought he was a stalker!

Mark Wahlberg-Telling the audience they'd all get home in time for dinner.

Colin Firth being star struck to a point that he felt he should thank security for letting him in... .
