Without Regret-Kimberly Caldwell
-(Capitol/Vanguard)
American Idol viewers still reeling from the loss of the talented Pia Toscano continued to be reassured that their Season 10 favorite will find a place in the music industry courtesy of success stories from those dismissed from the FOX series much earlier than deserved (Jennifer Hudson, Chris Daughtry).
Now, we have another fresh example to add, albeit much later than her fans would've liked via Season Two favorite Kimberly Caldwell's debut Capitol Records/Vanguard release Without Regret. Though delayed for nearly two years due to record company shuffling, it's not indicative of it's quality in the least.
An eleven song collection that engages from the word go, the set showcases Caldwell's throaty, smoldering sexy pipes (at time's reminiscent of fellow Lone Star state native/fellow Idol alum Kelly Clarkson and Faith Hill) quite effectively in a variety of settings including power pop (Desperate Boys and Stupid Girls), country-ish soul (If You're Gonna Fall) and even a little electro-rock (Going Going Gone). But the Katy, Texas native's sweet spots are showcased at their best on the powerful Heart Like Mine (co written by fomer Idol judge Kara Dioguardi), the synthesizer driven Frozen, and its best track, Say Love, one of the best power ballads I've heard in a long, long time; a hit single waiting to happen.
Yes Virginia, there is life after being booted off Idol...and this more than impressive debut from Caldwell offers nearly 40 minutes of enjoyable proof.
